  1. A ha Conan Doyle did say in Silver Blaze that he wore “his ear-flapped travelling cap” and in the Boscombe valley Mystery he had a “close-fitting cloth cap” which the Illustrator (Paget) took to mean a Deerstalker. Elementary, My dear reader

    1. No no no. You must be mistaken. If tumblr says he didnt wear a deerstalker, then he didn’t wear one. You can take your evidence and get out of here.

      I SAID GOOD DAY SIR!

    2. That explains why people think that, but it still doesn’t explicitly say that kind of hat in the books. Go ahead and look at the illustrations for Gollum based on the original version of the Hobbit and it’ll become pretty clear that illustrations aren’t necessarily canon.

      1. The original Sherlock stories as published in The Strand magazine included illustrations… and in the illustrations for Silver Blaze done by Sidney Paget the artist put a deerstalker on him. That is in fact where it all stems from.

        Elementary, really.

  2. Can someone please explain how tumblr works. I click on the source link and it is just the post. Who is having these conversations? please help.

  3. Tolkien specifically states that elves’ ears are “leaf shaped” several times over the course of the books. Yes, leaves can be round, but that seems out of the ordinary when compared to the fact that he never mentions anyone else’s ear shape but goes to the trouble to describe theirs.
