“Unschooler” Mom Doesn’t Teach 8-Year-Old Daughter To Read Because She Assumed Kids Just Learn On Their Own, Tutor Reads Her The Riot Act

There’s a growing number of parents who are opting to homeschool kids. One unconventional brand of this is “unschooling,” where you let the child drive the path of learning.

Sadly, this unschooler mom assumed her 8-year-old daughter would learn to read “organically” and refrained from teaching her. When her daughter was still illiterate at an age when most children were beginning to crack open their first chapter books, she knew something was wrong and brought her to a tutor who broke the bad news: not only can children not pick up reading and writing like they would walking or speaking, but her daughter had missed a critical education window and would now struggle to catch up.

Twitter user Andrew (@mrnastynodrama) shared the mother’s plea for help, which she had posted in a Facebook group called Radical Unschooling.

Social media netizens were baffled by the mother’s — ahem — unique approach to education. Scroll on for the reactions.
