Hell is empty and all the devils are here, and they’re making nightmare deepfakes of Jim Carrey to drive you to madness. If you don’t know what a deepfake is, I’m sorry you’re finding out like this.
A deepfake uses AI-learning technology to create extremely convincing replicas of people, and it’s getting easier and easier to do so.
There are still particularly good technicians who are famous for their deepfakes (most of them are porn related, as you would guess), and one creator on YouTuber named Ctrl Shift Face has a channel showing his work. His recent video clip “The Shining Starring Jim Carrey” went viral in a Reddit post because it is absolutely uncanny:
The video is Jack Nicholson’s voice and body, but it’s like his face has been lifted off and replaced by Jim Carrey’s. Carrey’s face also moves in perfect synch with the image, moving expressively in the same way Nicolson’s did. It’s truly uncanny.
Because most people are familiar with the actors and the film, the weirdness of the whole thing can be identified—but if you weren’t, would you be convinced? It’s a very unsettling watch, especially when the larger implications for how deepfakes could be used in the future. When the creators get tired of making porn, destabilizing democracy is next!
Not everyone is as afraid for the future fabric of reality as me. Most commenters think that this video is wicked awesome:
Well, some people are scared:
At least we’ll descend into chaos with a lot of really excellent YouTube content.
