It’s been a while since I’ve gone on a date, but once upon a time, it was normal to meet up with someone somewhere and get to know them in that place. It was even appropriate for the person who suggested the date to then suggest the location. Thus was born the phrase, “I know a spot.”
Thank you for paying attention during that ancient history lesson. It is relevant because the “I know a spot” meme is the newest one, and according to Know Your Meme, it’s based on a joke made by Twitter user Imane Kwan who wrote on June 22nd, “Guys be like ‘I know a spot’ and then take u to Burnaby Mountain.”

Burnaby Mountain is like a nature overlook in British Columbia from which you can see the city, which is also called Burnaby Mountain. Based on the context of the tweet, I’m guessing it’s kind of a cliché or well-known place for dates or just about anything. When you “know a spot,” it should be something exciting and innovative, not the same humdrum place everyone has been.
Enough people related to the Barnaby Mountain date for Kwan’s post to go viral, and soon everyone was making jokes about where certain people will take you for dates, always citing the corniest possible thing. Like all memes, the “I know a spot” meme quickly morphed, and people weren’t going to actual locations. They were more going on journeys of the mind. We all know a spot: inside our own heads. Because we still can’t go outside.
