For my generation, Mortal Kombat being released was a huge milestone. We really hadn’t ever seen anything quite like it. Realistic human characters with super gory violence. I mean, it was a great game but the Fatalities alone made it legendary.
If you’re like me, you never really gave any thought to the fact that somewhere there was footage of this all being filmed. All of the characters. All of the moves. It must have been so fun to be a production assistant on this shoot.
Fun Fact: Jean Claude Van Damme turned down the role of Johnny Cage so they added the “nut punch” move as a little joke toward his famous splits.
