Waitress Breaks Down On TikTok After Boss Forces Her To Give More Tips To Cooks Than She Keeps

In the US, tipping has become a divisive topic – some businesses think it’s great, but lots of folks who work in restaurants are somewhat over it. Relying on tips just to pay your bills is stressful enough, but then you gotta give some of that money away to someone else? No thanks.

TikToker @__heylee__ is a server who has gone viral on TikTok after expressing her frustration over an unfair tipping system at her restaurant that forced her to hand over a portion of her hard-earned tips to the cooks. Sometimes even more than she gets to keep for herself.

The server went viral after revealing the amount of cash she was forced to tip out the cooks at the end of her shift.

“I work as a waitress and when I first started there we tipped out the cooks 10% of whatever we made.”

“Or a little bit more if we made more, you know, whatever. And so, lately, they haven’t been really happy with the amount that I’ve been tipping out ’cause it’s been a small amount. I only work like two or three hours a day”

“I don’t make that much money. So my boss made it mandatory to tip them out 25 on the weekdays and 40 on the weekends”

“So now it’s Saturday and I only worked two hours and it was slow. So they sent me home early and she still expected me to pay out 40 bucks, but that’s like the exact amount of tips that I made. And so I went to her and I told her about it.”

“She made me tip 25 and I only went home with 15”

“Do you guys think that’s fair?”

The other waitresses work 8 hour days from open – close and make way more money so of course they can tip out $25 on the week days and $40 on the weekends. But I come in later and I’m always put in the section that doesn’t get a lot of business because it’s for overflow. I feel like I’m being treated unfairly and the other waitresses just say “we don’t make that much more than you do, and we still have to tip out”. If you work in the service industry, it’s important to know your rights and local labor laws.

How tips are distributed depends on factors like state laws and company culture, so it’s important to do your research. Sharing tips with back-of-the-house employees is common, but there needs to be a balance to make it fair.

After all, both servers and cooks are essential to keeping the business running. However, it’s not fair for servers to have to give up most of their tips to the cooks, who already earn a higher wage.

This TikToker explained how her boss forces her to give most of her tips to the cooks, leaving her with just a small amount of money for herself.

She only works for 2-3 hours a day and the amount she has to tip out is too high. She thinks it would be better if tips were based on a percentage of the bill, or if everyone was paid a fair wage instead.

In a follow-up video, she added another example of how management forces her to tip out cooks even though she didn’t make enough.

People who work in restaurants want to get paid fairly, just like anyone else. And customers should be nice to them, and not use big tips as a way to get special treatment.
