Hilariously Relatable Tumblr Thread Breaks Down The ‘Customer Service Voice’

Everyone has a customer service voice but some people have turned it into performance art. Having worked in retail for many years, I got pretty good at it but sometimes it’s hard to turn off. You start to sound robotic at times but it’s accepted in some scenarios. When I walk into a store or sit down at a table, I kind of expect a sort of cheery interaction from the server even though I know it’s not always the most authentic. Maybe I’m weird but that’s part of the experience, right?

The worst part about it is when you have a long day and you bring your customer service voice home with you. When someone isn’t expecting it, it can come off as rude. I remember when I used to bag groceries I had a script in my head I would always follow and say in my retail voice, “Would you like paper or plastic?” I had such a long day that I said it when I answered the phone.

This Tumblr thread about the customer service voice hits right at home for me.
