You know, I’m the kind of guy who buys a book and then just leaves it on the coffee table as some sort of aspirational home decor. It’s like my coffee table is trying to say, “Hey, this guy’s cultured,” when it’s more like, “Hey, this guy read half of the introduction, got distracted by Twitter, and here we are.” But dedications? Ah, those little nuggets of text before the impending doom of actual reading—those I can handle.
Most times, book dedications get skipped entirely or just aren’t work reading, but some authors are really nailing this pre-chapter limbo with dedications that range from “Huh, clever” to “Oh man, why isn’t the whole book this funny?”
From laugh-out-loud quips about their dysfunctional family reunions to not-so-subtle warnings about the R-rated passages to come—these funny book dedications have done the impossible: they’ve made me want to read more. No, seriously, I might actually flip the page this time.
