Manager Compels Employees To Dip Into PTO After Early Dismissal

Typically, managers prefer to seek volunteers before making the decision to send an employee home early, aiming to maintain a positive atmosphere among the staff. During my time working at a restaurant in university, I was often eager to volunteer for an early departure because I had other priorities I’d rather attend to.

However, more often than not, the managers would later regret being short-staffed. Of course, situations can become tense when nobody is willing to leave early, especially when everyone needs to work their full hours to cover their rent expenses.

This employee recounted an incident where their manager conducted rounds on a slow workday to find someone willing to leave early. The employee volunteered to leave early to help the team, initially anticipating that they wouldn’t be compensated for the hours they missed. However, to their surprise and against their preference, their pay was adjusted to cover a full 40-hour workweek by utilizing their paid time off (PTO).

Their attempts to dispute this situation only resulted in a delay in receiving their paycheck, which eventually led them to drop the matter in frustration. They then shared their experience on an online workplace community, sparking a discussion about the practice of sending employees home early, with readers offering advice on how to handle such situations.
