Job Candidate Rejected After Incorrectly Guessing The Salary Range

Negotiating your salary for your first job right after college can be an especially daunting task. As you gain a couple of years of work experience and start feeling more established in your career, it becomes easier to assert yourself and say, “I won’t accept this low offer!” However, when you’re fresh out of college, the eagerness to secure employment often leads you to consider almost any offer that comes your way, especially if you haven’t received many offers yet.

Even when your salary expectations are modest, recruiters sometimes have a way of making young professionals feel like they’re asking for the moon. Some conversations with recruiters can leave you thinking that anyone requesting more than $40,000 a year is akin to a character straight out of a Monopoly game.

A recent graduate, for instance, shared an experience where he was interviewed for a position requiring 60 hours a week and mentioned a desired salary of “$60,000,” only to be met with disapproval from the recruiter, who found it entirely unacceptable.
