Baby names are always in flux. A classic name in one generation might seem out-of-date in the next. Still, it can be a shock to realize that your own name has landed in the “old and uncool” category. For many of us who grew up in the 80s, that time has come.
In a viral TikTok video, baby name consultant Colleen Slagen reviewed the top 100 girl names from 1986 to see which ones “did not age well” and have dropped off the top 1,000 list entirely.
Spoiler alert: you might be more surprised by the names that are still trendy than by the ones now seen as outdated.
The first name Slagen declares “officially out” is Heather. That’s right, not even cult movie status could save it from dropping off the charts.
Some other names that have disappeared from the charts include Erica, Courtney, Lindsay, Tara, Crystal, Shannon, Brandy, and Dana. Tiffany, Brittany, and Casey are also quickly heading in the same direction.
However, Andrea is surprisingly holding on, while Jessica, Ashley, and Stephanie are still around, at least for now.
The name with the most impressive longevity is Jennifer. “Jennifer remained in the top 100 names until 2008. Let’s give a round of applause for Jennifer,” Slagen says in the video.
And, of course, lots of commenters weighed in with their own 80s name experiences.
