I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but yet another thing that Millennials and Gen Xers love has been deemed uncool by younger generations.
Apparently, eye shadow is now “cheugy,” joining the likes of skinny jeans, side parts, quoting Harry Potter, and saying “cheugy.”
Younger generations now consider eye shadow an “old lady thing”
TikTok user Jennifer Latch broke the news to us elders after her daughter informed her that eyeshadow is “an old lady thing.” (Her daughter can be seen in the video laughing maniacally as our entire world shatters).
But wait.
We don’t have to toss out our eye shadow palettes just yet. There is still a way to wear eye shadow without signaling to the world that you’re old and out of touch.
Gen Z still rocks the eye shadow — they just ease up on it and incorporate more natural tones.
Selena Gomez (not pictured above) is a perfect example. Although she fits firmly in the Millennial camp, her makeup looks still trend with younger generations. Why? She embraces that “natural” look wholeheartedly. Gomez places a heavy emphasis on skincare first. And when she does wear makeup, she opts for a color palette that matches her natural skin tone.
Nowadays, it’s all about looking like you’re wearing as little makeup as possible.
Celebrity makeup artist Melissa Murdick, who recently did makeup for Gomez, breaks down exactly how she pulls it off:

Not all Zoomers are condemning eye shadow
Some people in the Gen Z cohort came to Mom’s defense after her daughter called eye shadow an “old lady” style choice.
One Gen Zer said: “Gen Z here, uhhh idk who told her that.”
Another Zoomer added: “I’m Gen Z and I was 16/17 during the 2016 makeup era lol so no it’s not an old lady thing it’s just not currently on trend.”
Phew!

Makeup artist Erica Taylor reassures Millennials and Gen Xers that it’s okay to wear eye shadow and still be on trend.
She walks us through some pointers on how to nail the look and honestly, those Zoomers are onto something with their more natural-leaning tastes.
“I traded in the black liner for the Make Up For Ever bronze liner,” she explains in the video. “We still get detail, but it is a lot softer.”
