In a world where the jingle of a digital tip jar is heard at every turn, from your favorite barista’s counter to the delivery app on your phone, tipping fatigue is becoming a real thing. Gone are the days when tipping was reserved for exceptional service at a sit-down restaurant.
Now, with the subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) nudge from tip jars, suggested gratuities, and in-app reminders, many feel the pressure to tip for just about everything. And while showing appreciation for a job well done is important, where do we draw the line?
One woman, Lily Kate Holbert (@recycledboyfriend) recently shared her experience at a local Starbucks when the barista had the audacity to put her change right into the tip jar without asking.
