Duolingo has become a go-to way for people to learn a new language. With fun challenges, rewards for daily use, and an iconic green owl mascot, the app has exploded in popularity in recent years (their hilarious social media team hasn’t hurt, either).
I just wish they had a Tourist Mode for people who plan to visit a foreign country for a couple of weeks and need to know phrases like “Check, please” or “Where is the bathroom?” Duolingo does a great job of teaching you the basics quickly, but I don’t know if I’ll ever need to say “The boy likes apples” on the streets of Paris.
Duolingo also has a reputation for shaming users who fail to keep up with their lesson plan which, naturally, has inspired countless memes about the adorable owl’s threatening aura.
