Attention Walmart shoppers, there’s a 100% price rollback if you’re bold enough to try to steal something while being watched by AI. But you will probably get caught, just FYI.
TikTok user Nesha (@ohthatsnesh) recently went viral after she filmed herself getting caught by Walmart’s AI-powered “Missed Scan Detection” system while attempting to shoplift at a self-checkout.
In the video, Nesha can be seen scanning some items but intentionally skipping a backpack, which she tried to put through without paying for it.
Unfortunately for her, the AI system detected the missed scan and alerted a Walmart employee, who called the manager and had her escorted out by the police.
The outcome? A two-year ban from all Walmart locations in her area.
This woman attempted to steal a backpack from a Walmart self-checkout but was caught by the AI-powered “Missed Scan Detection” system
The video shows Nesha sliding the backpack across the scanner, careful to ensure the bar code wasn’t scanned.
But a new AI-powered tool prevents shoppers from pulling such a stunt.
A Walmart employee was alerted and laughed as the self-checkout monitor played back footage of Nesha’s crime.
“Even though she laughed … she called the manager… police and had us escorted outside,” Nesah wrote in the caption.
In the video, Nesha wrote, “POV: When you usually don’t get caught and now you’re banned for 2 years from all Walmarts in my area,” showing that she wasn’t exactly new to this game but still didn’t expect to get busted this time.

Walmart has bolstered its AI surveillance in recent years
Walmart has been rolling out this AI surveillance technology as part of its effort to curb the $3 billion it loses annually to theft.
The system uses cameras to monitor items that pass through the scanning area and alerts employees if something isn’t scanned properly.
Nesha’s video highlights just how effective these systems can be, and it sparked a debate online about shoplifting, with some people supporting the increased use of technology to catch thieves and others raising concerns about privacy.
Commenters were surprised Nesha thought she could get away with it
The video has since gained over 2 million views, with many commenters chiming in with their thoughts.
Some were shocked by her boldness, with one person commenting, “Can’t believe she actually filmed it and thought she’d get away with it.”
Others were less sympathetic, saying, “If you always steal, are you a shopper or a thief?”
Despite the viral attention, Nesha’s incident serves as a reminder that AI surveillance is becoming more prevalent in retail, and the consequences of shoplifting can be severe—even if it’s just for a viral TikTok video.
