Look, I’ve seen some impressive embroidery in my day—flowers, animals, the occasional “Live, Laugh, Love” in cursive—but this is something else entirely. Artist Victoria Rose Richards is out here casually stitching landscapes that look like they were plucked straight from a drone, and honestly, I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that these aren’t actual photos.
Victoria started with more traditional landscape embroidery, but in 2019, she zoomed way out (literally) and tried her hand at an aerial view. Turns out that was the missing piece. She wasn’t all that into stitching skies anyway, and aerials let her skip the clouds and get right into the juicy geometric details of fields, roads, and forests. And once she started, she didn’t stop. Let’s take a look at some of her most stunning work—just don’t be surprised if you suddenly feel the urge to buy a hoop and some thread.
