Wearing weather-appropriate clothes to work shouldn’t feel like an act of rebellion. If it’s 90 degrees outside, throwing on a pair of shorts isn’t a fashion statement—it’s a survival tactic. Most of us aren’t trying to turn the office into a beach party, we just don’t want to show up to work looking like we lost a fight with a sauna. But alas, some managers take pride in making their employees suffer.
This employee had done his homework, literally. He knew the company handbook inside and out, and his shorts were totally within company policy. Unfortunately, his new department manager hadn’t studied up and decided to flex his imaginary authority by sending the guy home to change. Rather than argue, the employee played it cool. He left, grabbed the company handbook, and returned with a smug smile and the same shorts. Sometimes, the best way to win an argument is to let the facts speak for themselves.
