Classical art usually feels pretty far removed from everyday life — grand paintings, dramatic lighting, and subjects who clearly have no idea what a smartphone is.
Artist Alexey Kondakov decided to change that, racking up over 150,000 followers in the process.
In his ongoing series, Kondakov takes figures straight out of classical art masterpieces and drops them into modern, often ordinary settings.
The results are surprisingly seamless, and somehow manage to make both the old and new feel a little more alive.
You’ll see mythical-looking characters riding public transit and navigating the same messy city life the rest of us know too well.
It’s a clever, sometimes funny, and oddly relatable mashup that makes you look at both art and real life a little differently.
We pulled together some of his standout work — go ahead and take a scroll through a timeline where centuries collide in the best way possible.
