Some people see a stack of scrap wood and think “fire pit.” Others see a coffee table, a hidden drawer, and a conversation starter. This post is for the latter.
These DIY woodworking projects range from clever to “wait, you built that?!” Whether you’re a seasoned builder or just here for ideas you’ll probably never do but love anyway, these are some seriously cool woodworking creations.
Here are some cool DIY woodworking designs that make regular furniture feel lazy.
1. “I have to gush – look at the coffee table my boyfriend made me”

“I saw a mid century coffee table at an estate sale going for $1800. My boyfriend said he could probably make it for me and he just finished. How lucky am I?!”
2. “Fiancé asked me to make an end table for the new couch to protect it from a bad little cat.”
“I’m going to be adding in a charging port on the top and a scratch mat on the side when they come in.
I used red oak plywood for the build and ended up trying out steam bending for the 3mm edging, and kerf bending for the first time on this project. The valence on the top is there to hide the bottom section of the charging port.”
3. “I thought for sure it wouldn’t work. Turns out it woodwork.”
“The curved half lap joints were more of a hassle then I couldve imagined. For a while I Did not think this design would work but seems like it did! Super sturdy.
I know it will come up – yes, it is built around a radiator. I’m worried about the heat but did everything I could to allow plenty of room for wood movement and space for heat to escape. Time will tell if I screwed up!”
4. “Made my 87 year old dad a present”
5. “Fireplace bench I did today”
6. “My sound proof sleeping box”
7. “My new wooden monstera sculpture.”
8. “The most fun and demanding project I’ve taken on.”

18. “Mahogany bookcase I made”
19. “I made a desk!”
“I was commissioned to build a desk. I sketched it months ago. A client reached out wanting a desk, so I showed them the sketch. They were immediately intrigued. They had already sat in one of my chairs and knew it was the route they wanted to go. I set fourth on modeling. Once they saw the model with the chair, they were in.
Traditional drawer slides (wood on wood), hand cut dovetail casework, half blinds, and the drawer pull is carved into the drawer front.
Last week I finished their desk and I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out. Very fortunate to have had such a great client for this black walnut set. Can’t wait to make it out of white oak!”
20. “I built a geodesic dome sauna”
“I built this with and for my dad over dad over the last year. I feel like I finally nailed the design for a dome sauna, using the interior wall to build benches all the way to the ceiling while allowing for an entryway. It’s got a 9kw HomeCraft heater in it and quickly reaches 190F.”
21. “A birdhouse I made a few months ago”
22. “Frank Lloyd Wright inspired lamp”
“I created this ‘stained glass’ Frank Lloyd Wright inspired 30” lamp using walnut, maple, mica and a LED tube light. I definitely made some mistakes but learned a ton as a noob – and making a MDF prototype really helped. I used my CNC, laser, and basically all my shop tools to make it!”
23. “I built an 8-foot tall whimsical bookcase from plywood, lauan, poplar, and padauk. This was a fun build and my wife absolutely loves it!”
