Juan Astasio’s comics feel like the exact moment a thought takes a left turn and crashes into something unexpectedly hilarious. Like trying to back you car out of a spot in a crowded parking lot and you hit clown falls down and bursts into 50 squirrels.
His single-panel comics, often seen in The New Yorker, manage to be smart, silly, and sharply observant all at once.
I’ve been going through a lot of comics lately, and Juan’s work always stops me mid-scroll—it’s got that perfect mix of wit and weirdness. Look, some New Yorker comics are a little dry for my taste, so it’s nice to see e fellow weirdo getting a shot.
Here are some of his funniest panels that made me laugh, nod, and occasionally slap my knee like an old timey prospector hearing a joke that would get you fired today.
