I grew up playing sports year-round—baseball, basketball, football, you name it. Even played into college, not well, but hey I played!
Look, if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that people take sports way too seriously. Like, it’s a game, not a life-or-death situation, Greg. Your girlfriend isn’t going to break up with you if you don’t hit a home run today. She’s leaving because you’re weird to be around.
Anyway, that’s what drew me to Trever Spaulding’s comics. He takes all that over-the-top seriousness and flips it into something silly and clever that isn’t just sniffing its own farts.
His single-panel sports comics—often featured in The New Yorker—are for anyone who loves sports but also is able to laugh at how ridiculous they can be. The are just grown men playing kid games.
