20 DIY Crafters Who Accidentally Became Fashion Designers
The internet’s full of DIY projects gone wrong… this is the opposite. These makers turned scraps, yarn, and old fabric into some of the coolest outfits you’ll see all week.
They didn’t just “make something cute”… they made art.
1. “I made a patchwork dress from my old jeans.”
2. “I made a monarch butterfly gown for an Enchanted Garden cocktail party”
“The cocktail party – aptly named Frocktails – is an annual event for local sewists to meet and mingle. This is what I wore this year.
The bodice was self-drafted and the skirt was a modified vintage pattern. I painted the whole thing as well, then hand-embroidered earrings to match.”
3. “I finally made it. My dream dress.”
4. “I made a craft utility vest so that I never have to stop crafting!”
“It includes a scissor holster, pin cushion, spool holder, retractable measuring tape, stitch marker holder, and crochet hook holders—and pockets! Great for my upcoming holiday road trips!”
5. “The single needle jeans I made, before and after a full year of daily wear”
6. “Hi! I sewed this winter corduroy bucket hat in my fav beige color. With fleece lining and ears on ribbons. It is very warm and very cute”
7. “I found a men’s suit in a thrift store and thought I could transform it into a women’s suit with a skirt. Here’s the stylish ensemble I created.”
8. “Just finished this blue sweater, it’s so cute!”
9. “Fashion student, made an outfit and wanted to share”
10. “Hoodie I made from thrifted woven blanket”
“Found the blanket/tapestry along with the quilt rack for just $6 at savers and had to buy it.
Made using Glory Allen’s free hoodie pattern. Originally wanted to have the logo in the center of the tapestry centered on the hoodie front but it wouldn’t leave enough anywhere to take a full piece for the back panel, but pretty happy with the pieces I was able to cut from it. It’s a little itchy and warm.”
11. “The dress I made for the Orange County fair”
“Wanted to show this dress that I made for the fair. I’m so happy it won an award! The dress is made with several layers of tulle, with some layers of the skirt having horsehair trim at the hem.
I bought tulle embroidered fabric and used a soldering iron to cut out the embroidery to make them into appliques. I then hand beaded them before attaching them to the dress.”
12. “I found the dress pattern in a 1957 magazine.”
13. “The most comfy wide leg pull on elastic waist pants.”
14. “Created this dress for my new etsy shop! So proud of this dress”
15. “My 2025 Handmade Wardrobe – Piece Two”
16. “In love with my knitted skirt”
“This is the Tove Rib Skirt by odd_row. I knit it in 2 strands of Holst Tides (merino/silk blend) held with 1 strand of Holst Titicaca (alpaca). The drape and movement on this is just insanely gorgeous, I love it so much!”
17. “1950s Inspired Dress & Jacket I Made!”
18. “This week has been a week of improving my basic sewing skills through making quilt clothing from thrift store quilts. Made this jacket for a friend last night.”
19. “I made my own Bridal outfit!”
20. “Baby Dress and bloomers ready to gift at my friend’s baby shower!”
