There’s a running joke that Americans don’t know anything about the world outside America, and the joke wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t at least a little bit true.
Not everyone, obviously, but enough people to make it a thing. You see it in tweets, in interviews, in those street videos where someone asks basic geography questions and the answers are somehow worse than guessing.
It’s not malicious ignorance, it’s just that nobody ever needed to know where Paraguay is or what currency they use in Sweden, so they never learned. And then the internet captures it and turns it into content, which is where we are now.
