Modern McDonald’s has this bleak, sterile vibe. I don’t know if it’s just because I was a kid back then, but the ’90s was peak McDonald’s. The buildings were colorful. The PlayPlace was nuts (and disgusting in hindsight). The food actually looked and tasted real. Everything about it felt designed to make you excited to be there.
