I’ve been reading comics since I was a kid and I still get that same little hit of satisfaction when the last panel catches me off guard. It’s like the written equivalent of someone pulling a chair out from under you, except you’re grateful for it.
Rusty Epstein is one of those artists who gets that formula down — sets you up with something familiar, then turns it sideways just enough that you’re laughing but also kind of staring at the wall for a second. His stuff lives in that weird space between “that’s hilarious” and “wait, is that what I’m doing with my life?”
