DIY Master Falls In Love With Stray Cat, Builds Him An Insulated Apartment For The Winter
I grew up with an outdoor cat who was so independent I’m still not totally sure he was actually my cat. He just kind of showed up, accepted some food and the occasional head scratch, and then went off to live his own mysterious life. I didn’t own him, we were just… friends.
That’s why this story hit me. In this Reddit post, a DIY expert in a neighborhood befriends a stray cat named Archie and decides to do something about the cold winters he has to endure.
Archie is very much an outdoor cat, but that doesn’t mean he should be left out in the elements, so this guy builds him a fully insulated little apartment to keep him safe and warm.
In return, Archie sticks around, keeps an eye on things, and handles the local mouse situation like a pro.
It’s a simple, wholesome arrangement that feels like a perfect understanding between human and cat.

Basic build – just a bunch of 2x4s and some plywood
5.
Double insulation on all 6 sides. Temps can get down to -20F

7.
Some wood siding. Just 2x4s cut down to strips of about 3/8″

9.
Primer and Tyvek tape. Didn’t need Tyvek, but thought I’d try to do it right!

Just about finished. No, not gonna put a ridge vent up there.

Electrical for his heated pad. Oh, and the paint matches our siding

I didn’t think he’d venture in until next winter. He went in straight away (because his yurt is in there!)
