I didn’t grow up with a dad, but I did grow up with a mom who was very firmly against getting a pet. For years it was a hard no… until one day she finally broke down and got me a cat when I was 8.

And just like that, everything changed.

The same person who didn’t want the responsibility suddenly had a new best friend. That cat went from “we are not getting a pet” to being treated like royalty, and honestly, I’m pretty sure she loved that cat at least as much as she loved me. I couldn’t even be mad about it.
