As a card-carrying Gen Xer, I grew up with a very real fear of quicksand. Movies, TV, cartoons… they made it seem like I’d be running into it at least once a week. You had to be ready. Mentally prepared. Maybe even carry a stick, just in case.

And yet, here I am, decades later, still waiting for my first quicksand encounter.

Turns out we were all walking around with a handful of very specific, very irrational fears that felt completely normal at the time. This thread from @PaulMarcoe is full of those exact memories, and it’s both hilarious and a little validating to know it wasn’t just me.
