Runner Defends His 6 A.M. Treadmill Routine After Neighbor Asks Him To Exercise Later
At 34, I’ve learned that staying in shape isn’t really about motivation anymore. It’s mostly logistics. The workout itself isn’t that hard. Finding 45 uninterrupted minutes is the challenge.
That’s why I understood this guy’s problem right away. He uses a treadmill a few mornings a week before his kids wake up because it’s the only time he can reliably fit a run into his schedule. Which sounds like exactly the kind of compromise adults end up making.
Then his neighbor asked him to stop.
She lives in an apartment above the garage and apparently the treadmill noise has been bothering her for a while. The awkward part is that she wasn’t rude about it. She didn’t complain to the landlord. She just asked if he could exercise later.
Now he’s stuck with one of those classic neighbor dilemmas where nobody seems unreasonable, but somebody is probably going to be inconvenienced.
Reddit had plenty of thoughts on who should be the one to adjust.

The comments mostly agreed on one thing: 6 a.m. is pretty early to be hearing somebody else’s treadmill. A lot of people felt the neighbor handled it the right way by bringing it up politely instead of going straight to the landlord or letting the frustration build. Others pointed out that the barking dog comparison doesn’t really work if she doesn’t even know how much the dog barks while she’s away.
Still, plenty of people understood why the guy was reluctant to give up the only workout time that fits into a busy schedule.
In the end, most Redditors thought the answer wasn’t picking a side so much as finding a compromise that lets everyone get a little more sleep.
