I grew up in a pretty middle-class family. By that I mean, we never had the “nice” stuff. Many of my friends did, though. I’d go over to their houses and it’d be like stepping into another world. One with a pantry full of snacks I’d never heard of, video games I’d never played, and somehow every room had a giant TV or its own cordless phones.
Some of these things were peak luxury at the time. Having a van with a TV in it or a fridge in the garage felt like billionaire behavior to me as a kid.
Looking back now, it’s funny how much random stuff we all treated like status symbols. Half of it would probably end up at a thrift store today.
