50 Of The Best Reactions To Cristopher Nolan’s The Odyssey

Full disclosure: I don’t really do reviews. I’m a trailer guy. If the preview hits, I’m in a seat. If it doesn’t, no amount of Rotten Tomatoes math is going to change my mind.

So when the discourse around Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey went nuclear months before anyone had seen a single frame — accusations of “woke” casting, trailers getting ratio’d into oblivion, pundits and even Elon Musk piling on over who got cast as Helen of Troy and rumors (false ones, it turns out) about Elliot Page playing Achilles — I mostly tuned it out.

I watched the trailer. Matt Damon looking haunted on a boat, a Trojan Horse the size of a building, all of it shot on IMAX cameras. Yeah, I vibed. I bought a ticket.

And now the funniest possible thing has happened: the movie is out, and the people who actually watched it can’t stop raving. The same film that was supposedly going to be a “woke” disaster is getting called staggering, a filmmaking feast, some of the best work of Nolan’s career.

Critics who saw it in IMAX came out sounding like they’d witnessed something biblical. Even the more measured takes basically boil down to “not quite S-tier Nolan, but the last act is worth the whole ride” — which, for a three-hour Greek epic, is a pretty good problem to have.

Turns out months of angry posts from people who hadn’t seen the movie were not, in fact, a reliable review. Who knew.

Well, Twitter did what it does best and gave us some great reactions to the movie’s opening.
