Self-deprecating jokes can be great when everyone knows you’re joking. I’ve made plenty at my own expense, and usually the people who know me understand what I’m doing. Online, the audience is a bunch of strangers who have no idea how you talk, what happened before you posted, or whether you’re laughing at yourself or repeating something somebody else said about you.

That can make a joke land in ways you didn’t expect. Sometimes people miss it entirely. Other times, they understand it but still want to check in.

Twitter user Katie shared a couple of photos from a wedding she attended with her husband and added a short, ironic caption. She probably wasn’t planning to start a conversation with strangers about how she sees herself, but the post took off.

What could have become an unpleasant comment section instead brought out a wave of people cheering her on. First, though, you have to see the caption that started it.
