Every time I get overwhelmed by the state of the world, I start looking at cabins in the woods, as if I know how to live off the land. I don’t. I hardly remember to charge my phone.

But this place could convince me to learn.

A tiny private island on Maine’s Moosehead Lake is on the market for $450,000. It comes with a renovated one-bedroom cabin, tall pine trees, mountain views, and around 200 feet of waterfront. The whole island is only one-tenth of an acre, so you’d own an entire island without owning enough land to get lost on it.

The listing was shared by Zillow Gone Wild, and now people are picturing a quieter life where nobody can stop by without first buying a boat.

The 660-square-foot cabin was renovated in 2022 and has one bedroom, one bathroom, a wood-burning stove, and stainless steel appliances. Power comes from a generator, while water is drawn from the lake.

I’m sure there’s a perfectly good system involved, but I’d still think about the fish every time I brushed my teeth.

Since the island is only accessible by boat, every grocery trip requires a little more planning. If you forget the milk, you’re not turning around. You’re eating dry cereal.

Then there’s getting furniture out there. Moving a couch is already hard enough without needing a boat.

The last little building raises a few questions, but privacy is privacy.

At $450,000, buying an entire island doesn’t sound completely ridiculous anymore. In plenty of cities, that gets you a condo where you can hear your upstairs neighbor sweeping.

At least nobody can just swing by unexpectedly. If someone wants to visit, they’d better own a boat and send a text first.
