19 Confusing Perspective Pictures That Had Us Looking Twice Last Month
I’m probably not qualified to explain what’s happening in a confusing picture. I am, however, very qualified to stare at one and confidently reach the wrong conclusion.
September gave us plenty of opportunities to do exactly that. People shared photos of ordinary things caught at angles that made them look anything but ordinary. And even after reading the explanation, a few still required some extra staring.
These confusing perspective pictures had us looking twice last month. If you figure them all out immediately, please let the rest of us have a minute.
1. “Half a girl doing her hair on the balcony”
They’re standing behind a railing with a hand fan resting on it. The fan blends into their shirt so well that part of their body seems to disappear.

2. “Which layer is on top?”
The material on the left sits on top. Its slightly raised edge casts a small shadow that gives it away.
3. “Just your regular dog.”
The dog turned its head sideways, folding one ear over. That strange-looking section is actually the inside of its ear.
4. “Guys beware of fake chargers it just burned my bed”
It’s not cake. I wish it was.
5. “Definitely did NOT think these were baptism related when I 1st saw them”
They’re candles, despite what your first glance might suggest.
6. “Flowers from my neighbor’s grandma”
Those fuzzy shapes are flowers hanging over the edge of a glass of water.
7. “Oddly shaped mattress”
It’s an adjustable mattress with two sides that can rise independently.
8. “The back of my friend’s dog’s head…!”
That’s the back of a dog’s head. Finding the face will require a different angle.
9. “A transparent cat spotted near the gas station.”
Reddit user u/John_Helmsword explained, “Just has a dirty camera. It’s horizontally smudging all light. You can do the same thing by wiping grease on your camera horizontally across the lens. The light is being stretched. Same thing is happening to the street light above, horizontally barred across the top of the screen. It’s causing all the small reflections on the car to smudge, too. Like astigmatism.”
10. “My daughter hit the juice box too hard”
11. “Took me a few seconds to realise this wasn’t a gorilla walking on the beach”
It’s a person wearing a baseball cap and bending down toward a fish. The angle does the rest.
12. “Two Tails”
There’s only one cat and one tail, although the photo makes that difficult to believe. Some Reddit users think the second “tail” is part of its hind leg.
13. “Rope fingers”
Their fingers are tucked behind the rope. Their similar coloring makes the hand and rope appear connected.
14. Who’s hugging who?
The person behind is hugging the person in front. Their raised shirts also make their shoulders appear higher and their necks shorter.
15. “He was a giant among men”
They’re balancing on a rope much closer to the camera. The people farther away make them look enormous.
16. Is this beachgoers cap facing backward?
The brim at the back is a shadow, making the hat look like it’s facing the opposite direction.
17. There’s probably a better way to display kid’s clothing
18. Errrm, ouch, maybe?
Its mouth is fine. The dog’s tongue lines up with the person’s hand, creating the appearance of a detached jaw.
19. Cats are liquid, but is that even a cat?
The cat has squeezed its upper body between the window blinds, producing a pose that takes a moment to figure out.
