Hamburger buns with a quote about a single bite taken from each.

30 Rude Houseguests Who Made Sure They’d Never Be Invited Back

Add as a preferred source on Google

I’m not trying to brag, but I’m pretty sure I’m one of the better houseguests out there. I leave the place cleaner than I found it. I’ll even fold the sheets if you want. You get the Airbnb cleaning fee experience without having to charge me $175.

If you’re letting me crash at your place, the least I can do is respect your space and be pleasant to be around. I want you to invite me back. Hotels are expensive.

Well, that’s a difficult concept for some people. These rude houseguests managed to turn a nice invitation into a story their hosts are still telling years later. Basic politeness would’ve prevented most of this list, but here we are.

1. “A Few Days Later I Went To Take Them Out, And He Had Taken A Single Bite Out Of Each Bun.”

I had a friend come to an after-bar and stay over. The last time he stayed over, I had a pack of hamburger buns in my freezer. A few days later I went to take them out and he had taken a single bite out of each bun.

So, that night I told him he could eat anything he wanted in the fridge, just leave the freezer alone, and DO NOT EAT my girlfriend’s lunch she had packed for the morning.

I woke up to my girlfriend yelling at me. He ate her lunch and left the evidence next to himself on the couch.

That night, I decided to grill some brats. I opened the freezer, one bite out of each frozen brat bun…again.

2. “He Showed Up Two Hours Late With No Dip And A Quarter Bag Of Chip Pieces.”

I invited this guy to my Super Bowl party, and he said he’d bring chips and dip. He showed up two hours late with no dip and a quarter bag of chip pieces.

He drank the good beer, then went to the kitchen and made up two to-go plates for him and his girlfriend at home. He left after 20 minutes.

3. “When Confronted, She Said, ‘Oh, I Thought This Was The Coat Room.’”

My college roommate brought his new girlfriend over for a house party. She went into my bedroom (door closed, clearly not a public room) and tried on my girlfriend’s clothes.

When confronted, she said, “Oh, I thought this was the coat room.”

It was a two-bedroom apartment.

4. “Still, He Brought His Mom Over To Clean (We Were In Our Late 20s).”

A rich buddy was staying for a week. My place wasn’t ritzy, but it was clean, spacious, and hygienic.

Still, he brought his mom over to clean (we were in our late 20s), who, in turn, brought in their fancy housekeeper to turn my place upside down to make it satisfactory for my bud.

5. “She Would Go To All Our Bathrooms And Change Them When She Visited.”

My MIL used to turn our toilet paper rolls around. We are team over, she’s team under. She would go to all our bathrooms and change them when she visited.

It went on for years. I’m sure worse things have happened, but this is low-stakes, petty, and dumb, and it makes me chuckle.

6. “They Arrived Over Three Hours Late And Brought Their Own Homemade Food In Ziplock Bags.”

When we were brand-new newlyweds, my husband invited his parents over to our tiny, sweet apartment for supper.

My MIL did not like me. While we were engaged, she said frequently that I was not good enough for him and could not take care of him. She made a scene at the rehearsal supper, tried to cancel the wedding, etc.

My husband decided that if she saw that we were living happily in a cozy apartment and eating good homemade food, she’d feel better and behave.

They arrived over three hours late and brought their own homemade food in Ziplock bags.

I told my husband to get them out and went into the bedroom. He did so. It’s been 20 years. They’ve never been invited over again.

7. “His Only Comment? ‘Your Kitchen Is Really Crappy For Counter Space.’”

A couple came and stayed with us when we had a new baby. The dude proceeded to make an elaborate brunch for only he and his wife, which absolutely destroyed our kitchen.

He, no joke, used almost every single dish and glass, left the sink full of egg shells (as well as dirty dishes), left food and mess everywhere, cleaned nothing, and then they went out and left us with that disgusting mess.

His only comment? “Your kitchen is really crappy for counter space.” The whole weekend was like that.

They said they were coming to visit us, but they just wanted to use our apartment and spare bedroom as an Airbnb for their little trip. They didn’t really do anything with us because we weren’t that flexible (read: just had a baby), so they just did their thing and left us to clean in their wake.

When they left, it was like a tornado had hit our guest room, and we were doing laundry for days (they used so many sheets and towels).

8. “He Told Us He Was Going To Visit For Just A Few Nights, But Arrived And Said, ‘Oh, It’s Actually For 10 Nights.’”

He told us he was going to visit for just a few nights, but arrived and said, “Oh, it’s actually for 10 nights.”

We lived in a 500-square-foot studio apartment. We spent a week entertaining him in our city. He expected us to pay for everything for him.

A relative was annoyed by the dog’s squeaky toys, so rather than saying something to us or removing the toys, she cut the toys all open, removed all the squeakers, and threw them out.

11. “She Asked Why She Had So Much Makeup If She Rarely Used It.”

A relative stayed at our house during the holidays and went through our bedroom and drawers.

When my wife got home, she asked why she had so much makeup if she rarely used it, then asked if she could keep some of the items she had found.

14. “Her Mom, My Sister-In-Law, Just Kind Of Laughed And Joked That Now The House Had Been ‘Broken In.’”

Invited the whole gaggle of in-laws to check out the new house we’d spent weeks reflooring, painting, and recarpeting. I made lasagna, salad with homemade dressing, and a fabulous strawberry cake from scratch.

My husband’s 21-year-old niece insisted on taking her plate to the den to watch Game of Thrones because she simply had to see it as soon as it was released.

Rude, but I got her a tray and set it up, then went to eat with everyone else. When we finished, we all went into the den, and she had dropped a giant glob of lasagna on the floor and apparently stepped in it at some point because it was ground into the brand-new carpet.

She’d also dropped salad onto the couch, and it left an oily stain. The worst thing, though, was that instead of telling us, trying to clean it up, or literally anything a normal human would do, she just placed a paper towel over it and left it there without saying a word.

Her mom, my sister-in-law, just kind of laughed and joked that now the house had been “broken in.”

There have been no family gatherings at our house with the entire group of in-laws since then.

15. “We Return To The Kitchen To Find Said Family Member Eating Leftover Mashed Potatoes From The Fridge With Their BARE HANDS!”

A relative came over for a group dinner, and my husband and I made it clear no one would be staying overnight.

The relative added a bunch of extra seasoning to their plate of spaghetti, then snuck and threw the entire plate away because it was “too salty” ([no kidding]). We only saw it later, hidden in the trash when we went to throw out other stuff.

Fast forward an hour or so, my husband and I return to the kitchen to find said family member eating leftover mashed potatoes from the fridge (that I was saving for my husband and were not part of that evening’s dinner) with their BARE HANDS!

They had even added a few spoons of spaghetti sauce (guess it wasn’t too salty when left [alone]) and proceeded to exclaim they were the best mashed potatoes they’d ever eaten.

They also intentionally drank too much to be able to drive home, thinking they would be allowed to stay, even though we said no overnight guests before dinner even started.

At the end of the day, my husband ended up driving the relative an hour across town to their house in their car, and calling an Uber to bring him back home.

It’s been a few years, and that still takes the cake.

16. “She Ended Up Outside On Purpose As Soon As I Found Out.”

Put my (indoor only) cat outside on purpose because she personally believed cats were “demonic.”

She ended up outside on purpose as soon as I found out.

The cat, thankfully, had the good sense to wait right by the door and was just fine.

17. “They Arrived Nearly Two Hours Early For A Dinner Party And Brought Their Toddler.”

They arrived nearly two hours early for a dinner party and brought their toddler, expecting a childproof area and toddler-specific food.

It was supposed to start at 8:30 pm and involve no children.

18. “On Our Wedding Day, My Aunt And Cousin Broke Into Our House And Trashed The Place.”

On our wedding day, my aunt and cousin broke into our house and trashed the place.

They hid one of each pair of shoes (several of which belonged to our friends), put cereal in our bed, disconnected the toilet tanks, took all the labels off our canned food, and put toilet paper all over the place.

They thought it was hilarious. It made us late picking up our dog from the kennel and for our gift opening.

They thought it was hilarious and that we were overreacting with how [angry] we were.

Unfortunately, it’s one of the main things that I think about when I think about our wedding day. It still makes me infuriated to this day.

19. “INSTEAD Of Telling Me, His Grandmother Just Closed The Book And Tried Hiding It.”

Hosted Thanksgiving at our place a few months after getting married. A cousin’s child had gotten hold of our wedding album and spilled Coke all over it.

INSTEAD of telling me, his grandmother just closed the book and tried hiding it. I found it a few minutes later, soaking wet and pictures ruined.

She didn’t even try to dry it off or let me know. Accidents happen, and I definitely wouldn’t have been upset that the kid did it.

I was more hurt by the disrespect of saying nothing and trying to play it off as if nothing had happened. They were just gonna leave it there for me to find later.

20. “Eating The Ice Cream That I Bought, Then SPITTING The Parts He Didn’t Like Back Into The Container.”

Eating the ice cream that I bought, then SPITTING the parts he didn’t like back into the container.

I wouldn’t care as much if he got a [bowl] and got his own serving. But eating it right out of the container and spitting it back in [made me angry].

We had a couple over for dinner, and the guy lifted his leg at the table and farted loudly. Then, he continued eating as though nothing had happened.

We’re still puzzled to this day, and that was probably 20 years ago.

24. “An Extended Family Friend Just Assumed They Could Stay At Our House When We Were On Vacation.”

We used to live about 20 minutes (by train) from NYC. An extended family friend just assumed they could stay at our house when we were on vacation.

They left our house like it was a hotel (basically dirty, and I came home needing to do about four loads of sheets and towels), and their kid stole a bunch of my son’s clothes.

27. “I Asked A Friend To House Sit While We Were On Our Honeymoon.”

I asked a friend to house sit while we were on our honeymoon.

They ate all our food, left food wrappers everywhere, left everything generally messy, and started a fire in our Woodstock, using all our emergency wood and melting my Halloween decorations on the top of the stove.

I cried when I got back. We didn’t talk for a long time, and I’m pretty sure my husband still hates him.

28. “She Carelessly Let The Cat Outside After We Told Her 10 Times To Be Careful Opening Doors.”

She carelessly let the cat outside after we told her 10 times to be careful opening doors. He was not an outdoor cat, and it took two days to get that little brat back inside.

And the girl who let him out was laughing about it like it wasn’t anything serious. I promise, if he hadn’t come back, it would’ve been VERY serious for her!

29. “My MIL Vaped In My House Without Asking While Visiting My Newborn.”

My MIL vaped in my house without asking while visiting my newborn. We also have dogs and cats.

She was sitting at my dining room table, and I was in the kitchen making breakfast. I poked my head around the corner to ask a question and saw the cloud of vape smoke over the table where she was sitting with the baby.

I was super polite about telling her to go outside after that, and scrubbed the walls/floors/furniture after they left, and she has never stayed with us again.
