October is the only month when I’ll see a skeleton standing in someone’s yard and think, “They seem like fun people.” Any other time of year, I’m taking a different route home.

I appreciate the big Halloween setups, but a small decoration with a good idea behind it can get me just as easily. Give a plant pot a tiny snake or turn a front door into a monster’s mouth, and you’ve got my attention. I’m a pretty easy audience for an inanimate object having a little personality.

These creative Halloween decorations and displays cover a healthy range of commitment, from clever little touches to houses you can probably spot halfway down the block.

All deserve a moment of appreciation before we return to our regularly scheduled activity of buying candy we insist is for the trick-or-treaters.
