Yes, Snape was a hero. Sort of. I mean, he was also a huge piece of shit to Harry, like, for the entire time. If he was actually on Harry’s side for the entire time, then he was just being a dick to Harry because he felt like it. Just because Harry’s dad married the woman Snape loved. Petty.
