The only thing worse than a work meeting that could have been an email is a work email that was an email.
Ok, maybe it’s not worse, but work emails are another thing no one really seems to like getting, sending, or responding to.
They’re often filled with the linguistic equivalent of chewing stale bread – a bland mixture of vague jargon, random acronyms, and the seemingly mandatory ‘per my last email‘ passive-aggressiveness. I’ve often thought about setting up a bingo game based solely on work email clichés, with squares for phrases like ‘just circling back’ and ‘kindly note’.
Every now and then, an email ends with ‘Best, [Insert Name]’, and I’m left wondering if it’s the best what? The best email they ever sent? The best attempt at hiding their frustration? It’s like a cliffhanger at the end of every communication. Also, the corporate world would be lost without the versatile ‘FYI’. It’s the perfect phrase for when you want to inform someone about something, but not actually take responsibility for it.
And don’t even get me started on the unending thread of ‘Reply All’ emails.
