“Britain’s Got Jokes” — (27 Tweets)
I grew up watching British comedies on PBS at weird hours, the kind of shows where nobody smiled at their own jokes and the laugh track was nowhere to be found.
Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, Absolutely Fabulous. I was probably too young for most of it but I absorbed something from all those hours, a deep appreciation for the joke that doesn’t announce itself.
The one that just sits there, completely straight-faced, and waits for you to catch up.
Americans are funny. But we tend to show our work. The British just… don’t.
They’ll say something devastating and move on like nothing happened.
Twitter gave them a global stage and honestly the rest of us are still catching up.
Every week I come across British tweets that stop me cold, not because they’re trying hard, but because they’re barely trying at all.
Here are some of the best ones lately from Great British Memes.
