Confession: I’m a map guy. Always have been. I was the kid who spent car rides tracing highways in the road atlas, the one who could get lost in a globe for an hour just spinning it and wondering what life was like in places I’d never heard of.
Geography wasn’t a subject for me — it was a hobby.
So you’d think, after decades of this, I’d be hard to surprise. And yet the @AmazingMap Twitter account humbles me on a regular basis. It’s become one of my favorite corners of the internet, and every time I check it, I walk away knowing something I didn’t before — a border quirk I’d never noticed, a population stat that broke my brain a little, some geographic oddity hiding in plain sight on maps I’ve stared at my whole life.
That’s the beauty of a great map: it can take a planet you’ve been studying since childhood and make it feel brand new.
