Airbnb Is Cracking Down On Checkout Chores, And Twitter Is Having A Field Day
I’ve never understood the appeal of paying to stay at someone’s house and then spending the last morning trying to earn their approval. I’m on vacation. Why am I worried someone will be disappointed in how I left her towels?
Airbnb has needed this for a while. The cleaning fees and checkout instructions have gotten out of hand. If I’m paying you to clean the place, I shouldn’t also need to squeeze in a load of laundry before my flight.
Now, Airbnb is limiting time-consuming checkout chores, including stripping beds and washing and putting away dishes, for reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026. Good. Cleaning up after yourself is reasonable. Paying hundreds of dollars to spend your Sunday following a laminated chore chart is ridiculous.
These tweets capture why guests have had enough. Personally, I’m happy to return to a hotel where the only checkout instruction is “leave.”
